Pretty Christmas Table Decoration Ideas And Festive Touches Around The House

These Christmas table decoration ideas are all from our home last Christmas, and most of them aren’t even on a dining table. It was our first Christmas after the renovation, so instead of one big tablescape, I spread little festive touches all around the house. The breakfast nook table, the coffee table, the kitchen counters, our little coffee and wine nook, and even a wall niche in the hallway all got some love.

I kept the colors classic: red berries, lots of greenery, white, gold, and a little black and white check. If you saw my red and green Christmas decor ideas inspired by Ralph Lauren, you’ll notice the same cozy, traditional mood here, just in smaller doses. None of these ideas take hours, and most of them use the same few pieces moved from room to room.

1. Start With A Berry And Greenery Centerpiece

Every Christmas table decoration in our house starts with greenery and red berries. On the round marble table in our breakfast nook, I laid a ring of faux cedar and pine, tucked red berry picks all around it, and set a gold bowl full of pinecones right in the middle. I added a few dried orange slices and cinnamon sticks too, so it smells like Christmas when you sit down. I like a low centerpiece like this because you can still see each other across the table, and it looks pretty from every side, even from the kitchen.

2. Style A Festive Christmas Morning Table

For Christmas morning, I kept the berry centerpiece in the middle and dressed the rest of the table with pieces I already had. A plain white teapot with matching cups keeps it simple, so the red and green really stand out. I poured the juice into cut glass goblets and set them on little wood and silver coasters, and I used small gold bowls for the berries and sliced apples, with a tiny sprig of holly tucked into the apples. White plates with thin gold stripes tie it all together. The croissants, raspberries, and holiday cookies add even more color, so the food ends up being part of the decor too.

3. Fill A Bowl With Red Ornaments

This is the easiest table decor idea in the whole post. I took a shallow gold bowl and filled it with red ornaments in different finishes: matte, shiny, and glitter. Mixing the finishes keeps it from looking flat. Then I tucked in a few pine sprigs, a pinecone, a little cluster of berries, and a piece of red velvet ribbon, and set the bowl on a bed of greenery. It works on a dining table, a coffee table, or a kitchen island, and it’s a nice way to use the extra ornaments that didn’t make it onto the tree.

4. Add Seasonal Fruit For A Pop Of Red

Seasonal fruit is one of my favorite things to decorate with in winter, and pomegranates are my go to because that deep red looks so pretty next to greenery. I placed two big ones in a silver bowl with a branch base, then filled in around them with pine and red berry picks. Right next to it, I lit a Darsee and David’s Vanilla and Berry Amber candle, and the ribbed red glass matches the fruit perfectly. Red apples or a few clementines work too. Real fruit lasts about a week or two on the counter, so just check it every few days and swap in fresh ones when you need to.

5. Bring Plaid To The Coffee Table

The coffee table in our living room got a red plaid runner with the same bowl of pinecones and red berries on top. Plaid is such a classic Christmas look, and it ties in with the plaid stockings on the fireplace and the big garland with red berries and a velvet bow on the corner of the mantel. Coffee tables get a lot of use during the holidays with drinks, games, and the kids, so I keep the decor to one piece in the middle. A runner folded across the table does a lot without taking up space.

6. Add Festive Touches To A Coffee Or Wine Nook

We have a little coffee and wine nook in our kitchen, tucked between the tall cabinets, and it’s one of my favorite spots to decorate. I hung a long dark red velvet ribbon from the gold sconce with a small bunch of greenery, then styled a marble tray underneath with our black and white check utensil holder. I sometimes use it as a little vase, so I filled it with greenery and berries and added a check pear and crystal candlesticks. With the sconce on at night, the whole nook glows. You can see more of this space in our kitchen reveal. A coffee station, a bar cart, or even a small corner of your counter works the same way. One tray and a few pieces are all you need.

7. Use Tall Red Taper Candles

Red taper candles are a quick way to make any spot feel festive. I used three in different heights in clear crystal candlesticks, so they look staggered instead of lined up in a row. The crystal catches the light, and the red picks up the berries and the velvet ribbon right behind them. Just keep real candles away from greenery and never leave them burning when you leave the room. If you have little ones at home, flameless taper candles look surprisingly real now.

8. Mix In A Little Black And White Check

Black and white check is my favorite way to make red and green feel a little more fun. I have a couple of MacKenzie-Childs Courtly Check canisters, and I style them next to a nutcracker on the kitchen counter. The check with the red knobs and gold details goes so well with Christmas colors. You don’t need a lot here. Even one or two check pieces next to your greenery make the whole look feel more personal.

9. Try Burgundy Hydrangeas Instead Of Fresh Flowers

By the stove, I filled a harlequin pot with faux burgundy hydrangeas, red berry sprays and a few cedar stems. Faux flowers are so much easier during the holidays. They don’t wilt when the kitchen gets warm, and you can use them again next year. The deep burgundy feels a little richer than bright red, and it looks pretty next to the gold rim of the pot. I added the nutcracker and another Vanilla and Berry Amber candle beside it.

10. Style A Pair Of Matching Vases

I have two white vases with raised flowers that stay out all year. For Christmas, I filled them with big bunches of faux cedar and red berry stems and set a candle in between. Using a matching pair makes any spot look balanced and finished, and the red, green, and white really stand out against a plain wall. Ours sit in a little niche in the hallway, but a shelf, console or entry table works the same way.

11. Let The Elf Join The Decor

Our elf shows up in the decor all December, and the kids love finding him. One morning he was sitting right in the middle of the greenery in one of the hallway vases. It’s a small thing, but it makes the decorations feel fun and lived in, not just pretty. If you do Elf on the Shelf, hiding him inside your Christmas arrangements is an easy idea for the mornings you run out of time.

Christmas Table Decoration FAQ

How do you decorate a Christmas table on a budget?

Start with faux greenery and red berry picks, then add things you already have, like ornaments, pinecones, candles, and a pretty bowl. One good centerpiece does more than lots of small pieces.

What colors work best for Christmas table decor?

Red, green, white, and gold are classic for a reason. I like adding a little black and white check or plaid so it feels personal.

How tall should a Christmas centerpiece be?

For a table where people sit and eat, keep it low, about 12 inches or less, so everyone can see each other. Taller arrangements work better on consoles, bars, and wall niches.

Can I use real fruit in Christmas decorations?

Yes. Pomegranates, oranges and apples look so pretty. Check them every few days and swap any that get soft.

How do I decorate a coffee table for Christmas?

Use a runner or tray as a base, then add one centerpiece, like a bowl of ornaments or pinecones with berries. Keep the rest of the table open for drinks and games.

When should I put out my Christmas table decorations?

Right after Thanksgiving is a great time. Faux greenery and berries hold up all season, so you only need to refresh fresh fruit and flowers.

Are faux flowers okay for a Christmas table decoration?

Yes. Good faux flowers and greenery look real, last for years, and don’t drop needles on your table.

How do I make my Christmas decor look the same around the house?

Pick a few colors and repeat them in every room. I used the same red berries, greenery, and candles in the kitchen, the breakfast nook, the living room, and the hallway.

Bottom Line

You don’t need a big dining room tablescape to make your home feel festive. A berry centerpiece on the breakfast table, a plaid runner on the coffee table, a few red candles and a pair of vases in a hallway niche all add up. Pick a few colors, repeat them from room to room, and have fun with it.
