Spending New Year’s Eve in Rio de Janeiro was on my bucket list for years, and it lived up to every bit of the hype. We partied until sunrise, and I’ll never forget it. In this post, I’m sharing where we celebrated (my sister’s milestone birthday), why we chose that spot, and other great places to party in Rio. If you’re still planning your trip, I shared all my tips for visiting Brazil in this post.
Best New Year’s Eve Parties In Rio de Janeiro At A Glance

Here’s a quick look at every party in this guide, starting with where we celebrated. All prices are in US dollars (USD) and are per person (unless noted). These prices are current as of October 2026, but they change every year, so check each party’s website for the latest. Prices marked with * are from last year because this year’s aren’t out yet, so expect them to be a little higher. Some hotels also add a 10% to 15% service fee, which I noted under each one.

Where The Big Party Happens: Copacabana Beach (Free)

The biggest party on New Year’s Eve in Rio de Janeiro is free and right on the sand. About 2.6 million people celebrated on Copacabana Beach last year, almost all dressed in white. Three concert stages feature some of Brazil’s biggest names, and the night also has a drone show and about 12 minutes of fireworks launched from 19 barges in the ocean. Most of the parties on this list plan their night around those fireworks.

Roads start closing in the morning, and taxis can’t get through at night. Luckily, we booked a ride through our hotel that took us to the party and brought us back. If you can book your ride ahead of time, do it. Otherwise, you can walk or take the metro; just buy your metro ticket in advance. I’m not kidding, getting back is the BIGGEST headache of the night if you don’t plan ahead. Plan it right, or you’ll pay the price when you’re stuck in the crowds after the parties end, hahaha!

- Cons: It’s one of the pricier parties, and tickets go fast.

This is where we celebrated. Having a Brazilian friend in our corner helped so much. She’s been to more New Year’s Eve parties in Rio than she can count, and she kept coming back to the Copacabana Palace party. She said the music, food, and drinks made it one of the most memorable nights in Rio, and she wasn’t wrong.

The food and drinks were unbelievable. The premium open bar features Veuve Clicquot, seafood and meat stations, desserts everywhere, and DJs and live music until sunrise. At midnight, you toast on the terrace while the fireworks go off over the beach, right in front of the main stage. The dress code is smart casual, and almost everyone wears white.

Tickets sell online and must be paid for in advance. You don’t have to stay at the hotel to go; however, if you’d like to stay at the Copacabana Palace, Belmond offers a five-night New Year’s package that includes your party ticket.

What To Wear On New Year’s Eve In Rio de Janeiro

Wear white. It’s a Brazilian tradition for peace and a fresh start, and when you look down at Copacabana Beach at midnight, almost everyone is in white. Some people also choose their underwear color for luck: pink for love, yellow for money, and green for health. I’d go with something light and flowy, since it’s summer in Rio, and it stays warm all night. Also, flat sandals are a good idea if you’ll be walking on the sand.
Tips For Planning New Year’s Eve In Rio de Janeiro

- Book early. We booked in August because Rio’s good hotels sell out fast for New Year’s Eve. Plus, many hotels require a minimum stay of 3 to 5 nights.
- Stay in Copacabana if you can. Roads start closing in the morning, and taxis can’t get through, so being able to walk back to your hotel makes the night so much easier.
- Buy your party tickets early. Most parties sell in rounds, and prices go up each time a round sells out.
- Take the metro. To ride the metro to Copacabana that night, buy a ticket ahead of time.
- Keep valuables at home. Police checkpoints and metal detectors are on the beach, but with millions of people there, it’s best to carry only what you need.

Our Favorite New Year’s Eve Party In Rio de Janeiro

If you’re asking me where to spend New Year’s Eve in Rio de Janeiro, I’d say the Copacabana Palace, and I 100% recommend it. We only went to one party, so I can’t compare it to the others on this list, but it was one of the best New Year’s Eve parties I’ve ever been to. It felt like being in a James Bond movie. Everyone was dressed up; the food and drinks were phenomenal, and the DJs were incredible!
Matt and I loved every minute, and so did all our friends. We partied hard all night. The balcony had a beautiful view of the beach and the ocean, and we could look down and see everyone on the sand celebrating below us. Then at midnight, fireworks shot up from the ocean, with Christ the Redeemer lit up over the city. I still get chills thinking about it.
Also, celebrating my sister’s birthday there made it even more special, and I will never forget that experience! If you have any questions about planning your trip, leave them in the comments, and I’ll do my best to help.
Love,
Sherry XOXO
