How I Styled Our Home for Christmas with Timeless Red and Green Decor and a Ralph Lauren Christmas Aesthetic

Christmas is already over, but I still wanted to share our red and green Christmas decor, styled in a classic Ralph Lauren Christmas aesthetic. December was such a chaotic season for us…. between finishing parts of our renovation, starting new projects outside the house, exterior painting, and all the work that comes after a renovation, time completely flew by. I never got a chance to share our home for Christmas here on the blog.

I didn’t want to skip it, though. I love keeping our seasonal decor documented and archived as memories I can look back on later. This year’s red-and-green Christmas decor ideas felt especially timeless to me; rich red and green tones, cozy layers, and a collected look that is elegant, warm, and familiar rather than trendy. It’s a style I’ll always come back to, and I wanted to have it documented in one place.

Red and Green Christmas Living Room Decor

The Ralph Lauren Christmas aesthetic was such a big hit this year, and I can tell you how much I personally loved this look. It’s such a rich, full-on Christmas style; deep colors, warmth, and that classic, elegant feel that really makes a home feel festive.

Over the past several years, I’ve done so many different Christmas color schemes, from blush pink to silver, white winter wonderland, and a few other variations in between. But I have to say, getting back to a more classic Christmas look, especially in that Ralph Lauren style, felt so refreshing. It’s a look I didn’t even realize how much I missed until I brought it back.

This year, the living room truly became the heart of our red-and-green Christmas decor. I honestly loved it so much that I may even stick with this color combination next year, maybe changing it up slightly, but keeping the same overall vibe. It brought so much warmth, beauty, and elegance to the house, making everything feel both grounded and festive.

If I’m being honest, the most challenging part for me was finding the right Christmas ornaments. I didn’t want a regular bright red- I was really set on more of a “wine-colored red” or burgundy.

And that part was actually a little challenging. I tried so many ornaments from different places, and I knew I wanted something simple with no patterns or designs because I wanted to keep everything minimal, elegant, and clean. Just solid, rich burgundy ball ornaments.

It wasn’t easy to find exactly what I had in mind, but I finally found the right shades on Etsy. You can find similar options on Amazon, too, but I noticed those were either a bit lighter in red or smaller than what I wanted. I was pretty specific about the size and tone.

Once all the ornaments were on the Christmas tree, I added dark, rich red velvet ribbon to each ornament and wove the same ribbon throughout the branches. That final touch pulled everything together beautifully—timeless, elegant, and not overwhelming.

Styling the Patio Doors for an Indoor-Outdoor Christmas Look

To bring more of that Christmas feeling into the living room, I also styled the patio doors since they’re such a big visual part of the space. I wanted them to feel festive but still elegant, so I hung a medium-sized Christmas wreath (24″) on each door and added a dark red, wine-colored velvet bow in the center. That deep red pop made such a difference against the greenery and the natural light coming through the doors.

What I loved most was how the doors tied everything together. The red from the bows picked up the tones of the tree, the pillows, and the rest of the red-and-green Christmas decorations in the room, while the greenery kept everything cohesive and balanced.

It made the entire living room feel more finished and intentional, especially since this is all one open space. Sometimes it’s those small touches that have the most significant impact.

Designing a Cascaded Fireplace Mantel for Christmas

The living room wouldn’t feel complete for Christmas without decorating the fireplace mantel, and this year I really wanted to create a cascaded fireplace design.

I love the cascade look because it feels dramatic and elevated, but I still wanted it to stay proportional and make sense for a real living room, not something you’d see in an over-the-top hotel lobby. The goal was a cascaded look that felt full and impactful but still fit beautifully into our space.

I went back and forth for a while on whether to fully garland both sides of the mantel or keep one side lighter with candles and stockings. In the end, I decided to do one side with a full, cascaded garland and keep the other side more styled and balanced, and I’m so glad I did. It gave the fireplace that dramatic flow I was looking for without overwhelming the room.

Creating a Full, Cascaded Mantel Design

One of the easiest tricks I picked up from Pinterest and Instagram for achieving a really full cascaded look is adding height underneath first. I used a couple of Amazon delivery boxes, secured them so they wouldn’t move, and placed them under the garland area.

Then I covered the boxes with inexpensive garlands from craft stores before layering my nicer garlands on top. That way, the cascade looked full and elevated without wasting the good garlands just to build volume.

Because layering garlands can get heavy, I also used hooks to hold everything in place so nothing shifted or fell. Once the main cascade was set, I added a few hanging greenery pieces to enhance that flowing look, then tucked in holly branches for contrast and to bring in those rich red tones.

I finished it off with one large, dark-red wine-colored velvet bow, which really completed the cascading design and tied it back to the rest of the living room and the red-and-green-decorated Christmas trees nearby.

Decorating with Red and Green Throughout the Kitchen

One of the main things I’ve always wanted to do for Christmas is decorate our kitchen arch. I feel like it’s such a focal point, especially with all the seasonal decor around the house, so I really wanted it to feel special.

I went back and forth between putting a big wreath on top of the arch or wrapping it with colorful red holly branches. In the end, I decided to go with the red holly branches around the arch because I knew they would really pop against the white kitchen and all the green we already have throughout the space.

Styling the Kitchen Arch Without Overdoing It

To hang everything, I used Command hooks, the kind that don’t damage the walls or paint, which made it super easy and stress-free. I placed them underneath the arch and wrapped the branches all around.

I’ll be honest, I did think about making it a little thicker, but I didn’t want to overwhelm the arch or make the kitchen feel too heavy. I really wanted to keep it classic and elegant, and once it was up, I ended up loving how clean and balanced it looked.

Soft Christmas Touches for the Coffee and Wine Station

I also added a simple ribbon to the sconces in our coffee and wine station and styled that area with a few candles and some greenery mixed with holly branches. It gave that corner a soft, elegant touch without doing too much. I thought about adding more greenery or even doing something festive on the chandelier, but I didn’t want it to clash with the artwork nearby, so I decided to leave it as is.

In the end, every corner still had a nice pop of red and green, which I really loved. Everything felt consistent with the living room since it’s one open space, and the decorating with red and green flowed naturally throughout the house.

Simple Christmas Styling for the Breakfast Corner

After that, I moved on to our kitchen’s breakfast corner, which is honestly one of my favorite spots. I love this little area so much, and for Christmas, I wanted it to feel festive but still pretty and intentional. I placed a green wreath on the table and layered a smaller red holly wreath right inside it, which gave it the perfect red-and-green contrast without feeling too much.

On the table, I added a bowl filled with natural seasonal elements, things like pinecones, cinnamon sticks, and some greenery, to give it that warm, holiday feel. I finished it off with a few small red holly branches just to add a pop of color, and that was really all it needed. The whole corner felt cozy, festive, and pulled together without overdoing it.

Light Christmas Touches Throughout the Hallway

For the hallway and walkway areas, I kept things really simple. I used two large vases and filled them with greenery and holly branches, nothing fancy, just enough to bring a little Christmas feeling into the space. I wanted the hallway and entryway to feel festive as you walk through, but still clean and understated.

Since our house isn’t fully furnished yet and there are still a few areas that need to be finished and decorated, I didn’t want to overdo it. Adding just a small touch of greenery felt like the right balance for now. It gave the space a hint of holiday without feeling unfinished or forced, and it tied in nicely with the rest of the decor throughout the house.

Bottom Line!

Honestly, even though this was our first Christmas after the renovation, the house still doesn’t feel finished. It isn’t fully furnished, and I know I still have a long way to go before everything feels truly complete and pulled together.

I’m already looking forward to next Christmas, hoping that by then the house is fully done, furnished, and settled, so I can bring the Christmas vibes together indoors and out the way I love to. But even with the house only partially furnished and the renovation about 90% complete, I was still so happy to be able to decorate and make it feel warm, inviting, and like home.

I have to say, I truly fell in love with the dark red, burgundy, and green color combination this year. Some people call it traditional Christmas, some call it classic, and of course, there’s the Ralph Lauren Christmas aesthetic…, but whatever you want to call it, those colors just feel like Christmas to me. I’m honestly going to have such a hard time taking everything down because I’ve loved looking at it and enjoying it every single day. haha!

Love,

Sherry XOXO
