What to Pack for New York in Fall
New York in fall is the trip everyone wants to take and nobody packs correctly for. It’s warmer than you think during the day and colder than you think after six, and you walk about eight miles without meaning to.

Six pieces. That’s genuinely enough for a long weekend, because everything here works with everything else.
The trench does the heaviest lifting. Line and Dot’s Linden in khaki is the classic version, and khaki is the right call because it goes over every single thing you packed. It also handles rain, which matters more in October than the temperature does.
Underneath, the Lioness Martini mini in chocolate. One dress that reads casual with the scarf and dressed up without it. Chocolate is more forgiving than black for travel, it doesn’t show everything and it photographs warmer.
The Hat Attack cozy scarf in deep chocolate is the thing people leave at home and then buy at a tourist shop for forty dollars. Bring one. It’s also the piece that turns a daytime outfit into an evening one.
The Schutz Paola pump in natural is the dinner shoe, and I’d say that clearly. You are not walking the High Line in these. Pack a boot or a loafer for daytime and let this one be for the reservation you made three weeks ago.
The Cult Gaia Kazia crossbody in espresso is the right shape for a city. Hands free on the subway, small enough that you’re not carrying weight all day, and espresso sits with the chocolate rather than competing with it.
Gold earrings last. The Heaven Mayhem baby knots are small enough to sleep in and wear for four days straight, which is exactly what you want travelling.
If you’re building around one thing, build around the trench.
