There is so much to see and do in the U.S. that you should really try to experience it all! However, even seasoned travelers can stumble and make simple errors when planning epic trips. Between navigating new places and just getting caught up in the excitement, it is easy to fall into travel traps. But I have got you covered! Take a look at these common mistakes that travelers make when exploring the U.S. When you learn about these oversights and errors, you will be better equipped to avoid them.

Overplanning Your Itinerary

There is a lot to see inside the walls of the USA. It is straightforward to try to do it all in one trip! However, you want your trip to be enjoyable rather than hurried and stressful. Make sure you plan enough time for each event and each destination so that you can enjoy your trip rather than feeling rushed. You can always visit a place again if you want to see more!

Ignoring Time Zone Changes

You may not think about changing time zones when you travel within the U.S., but you definitely should. There are actually four different time zones in the continental U.S. Traveling from one side of the country to the other can completely interrupt your circadian rhythm! This doesn’t even include Hawaii, which is six hours away from New York. You need to think about changing time zones as you plan your trip.

Choosing Only Tourist Spots

While tourist spots are often on travelers’ to-do lists, they are likely not all there is to do and see. Rather than only doing what the guidebooks tell you, ask locals where the best spots are. Going off the beaten path and finding your own adventure is okay. Sometimes, the hidden gems are even better than the prominent tourist places.

Not Checking The Weather

Before hopping on a plane or jumping in a car to go on vacation, you should always check the weather. Just because you are going to historically hot Florida doesn’t mean the weather will be warm. There might be a hurricane coming that you don’t know about! Always look at the weather for where you will be visiting so you can pack appropriately.

Over Packing

Think about what you really, truly need on your trip. Then try to reduce that by half. Overpacking is something so many travelers do and later regret. You want to avoid hauling an overstuffed suitcase across the country when you do not need to. Count how many days you will be gone, consider the weather, and look to see if there will be a washer and dryer you can use to clean your clothes. All these factors should help you know exactly what to pack and leave at home!

Skipping Travel Insurance

Many say no to travel insurance, but that may not be the smartest move. You never know when disastrous weather may strike or if you may get terribly sick right before a trip. Travel insurance will help to protect your investment and give you peace of mind, knowing that you can back out at the last minute. It is worth every penny!

Not Booking in Advance

While it is nice to think you can show up on a vacation and have a place to stay or snag those attraction tickets that you want, it is not practical. Hotels sell out, attractions become booked, and you may not get into that restaurant you wanted to try. Always book in advance so you can visit all the places you want on your trip. You can always cancel if you change your mind!

Not Considering Travel Plans

How will you get around once you arrive in the U.S. destination of your choice? Do you need to rent a car? Is there public transportation you can use? Is everything within walking distance? You need to consider your mode of transportation while on your vacation. You don’t want to be stuck in an unknown place with no way to see the sights!

Relying on Credit Cards

While credit cards are fantastic to use while on vacation (get those points!), you should also bring alternative payment methods. What if your credit card gets declined or, worse, stolen? You want to be prepared with other ways to pay for your needs. Bring cash, checks, or even traveler’s checks on your trip. Try setting up phone payment methods, too. This way, you are ready for anything that comes your way!

Skipping a Budget

Anytime you travel, you should set a budget for yourself. It is very easy to overspend when on a trip, and you do not want to come home broke or with extremely high bills. Consider the costs of all the attractions you want to see, your travel, and your food. Make a budget and choose things to do that fit into that budget. You will enjoy your trip more when you do not overspend!

Not Backing Up Pictures

The USA is a gorgeous place, and you will likely take a lot of pictures on your trip. Make sure you back them up onto the cloud at the end of every day! You don’t want a technology mishap or a stolen phone to cause all of those memories to be lost. Back up your pictures so you can keep those moments forever!

Not Making Copies of Important Documents

Even when traveling in the U.S., you should always have extra copies of your documents in case they get lost. Make a photocopy of your license and major credit cards and put the copies somewhere safe, away from the originals. Consider sending digital copies to a “secret” email that you can easily access. If you lose or misplace any originals, you will be able to pull up your backups, and your trip can continue as planned!

Not Packing Comfortable Shoes

If you’re planning to explore cities or national parks in the U.S., you’ll be doing a lot of walking—so comfy shoes are non-negotiable. Sure, you might want to look stylish, but if you skip comfort, you’ll end up with sore feet and regrets. Pack some dependable sneakers or walking shoes, and you’ll enjoy every step of your adventure. Trust me, your feet will thank you by the end of the day.

Misunderstanding Tipping Etiquette

Tipping in the U.S. can be a bit confusing, especially if you’re not used to it, but it’s an important part of the culture. Many workers, like servers in restaurants or bartenders, depend on tips as a significant part of their income. As a general rule, it’s polite to leave 15-20% of the bill at restaurants and tip a few dollars for hotel staff, taxi drivers, or anyone who provides a service.

Not Being Aware of Local Laws

Laws change from state to state in the U.S., and something that’s fine in one place could get you in trouble in another. Things like open container rules or speed limits can catch you off guard if you’re not paying attention. It’s worth spending a few minutes checking local laws before you head out—better safe than dealing with fines or hassles on your trip.
