These 15 Kitchen Tools Are Just Cluttering Your Countertops
Isn’t it wild how easy cooking has become? We no longer need to spend hours prepping for a dish that’ll be gone in minutes. It’s also amazing how we’ve got plenty of quirky kitchen gadgets that make everything easier for us. And while it’s been a fun ride, you’ve got to realize that some kitchen gadgets just don’t cut it. Here are some kitchen tools you can do without.
Avocado Slicer

An avocado slicer may sound like the perfect tool because cutting an avocado and de-pitting it takes a while, but it’s not as helpful as it’s advertised. While it’ll undoubtedly make the slicing part easier, it takes equally long to get the pit out. Plus, holding and controlling is often awkward, so you’re better off with your original knife.
Garlic Press

A garlic press seems like the ideal kitchen gadget because peeling cloves is one of the most annoying things, but is it as easy as it looks? Not really. While it’s undoubtedly fun and quick to shove the garlic clove through those tiny metal cloves, you’ll hate the garlic press when it’s time to clean. It’s just better to get a chef’s knife.
Egg Separator

We get it: not everyone likes dealing with yucky hands after handling eggs. But if you’re using an egg separator, it’s going to end up happening either way. Egg separators don’t work every time, so the chances of having to filter out the eggs manually are pretty high. Egg separators also waste a lot because they might not get all the egg whites out, so it’s best if you use your hands and wash them later.
Melon Baller

Those aesthetic Instagram fruit videos convinced a lot of us to buy melon ballers, but these gadgets aren’t worth the hassle. Sure, having cute melon orbs would be great, but using a melon baller every time is not practical. You’d get the work done faster with a knife and spoon. Besides, who wants to spend hours on a fruit that could be eaten within five minutes?
Taco Holders

Taco holders look pretty and efficient, but are they really worth the purchase? Not if you like your kitchen space. They take up a lot of counter and cupboard space, making the kitchen look cluttered. They’re also almost always a one-purpose purchase. Just skip this one and get plates to stack your hot tacos.
Butter Spreader

Once you glance at a butter spread, you’ll understand why it’s not worth putting your bucks on. A butter spreader looks almost identical to a regular butter knife; the only difference is that it’s much broader. While that might be helpful, it doesn’t make much of a difference. Why waste your money?
Egg Poacher

Poaching eggs can be challenging when you’re a beginner cook, so we get the appeal of buying an egg poacher. But an egg poacher is an unnecessary tool that’ll clutter your kitchen space. It also doesn’t guarantee an egg poach; you could end up with a half-poached, half-fried egg, so it’s not feasible. Besides, it’s also tough to clean.
Electric Knife

An electric knife is one of the dumbest purchases you’ll see. While it’s tempting to cut through an entire turkey with ease, that’s the only time you’ll need something other than a conventional knife. An electric knife is also challenging to carry and maintain because of the cords or having to recheck the batteries every time it dies out.
Spaghetti Measurer

You can never have too much spaghetti. Jokes aside, a spaghetti measurer might seem like an interesting purchase, but you can always eyeball the size. There’s also an easy tip: fold your thumb and index finger so they touch; the circle is the size of one serving. Just use this instead of wasting money on a spaghetti measurer.
Bagel Slicer

Aesthetic food videos have us all fooled into thinking a bagel slicer would finally get us the easy deal that we want. While it certainly works as advertised and cuts through the bagel, who would need to waste money on something they could easily achieve through their hand? The tool isn’t used frequently enough to justify its purchase.
Apple Corer

An apple corer might sound handy, but it doesn’t really add much value. You can easily remove an apple core with a regular knife, and the corer itself can be a hassle to use and clean. If you don’t core apples every day, it’s likely to just sit in a drawer and take up space.
Herb Scissors

Herb scissors, with their multiple blades, are supposed to make chopping herbs a breeze, but they often cause more frustration than help. Tiny herb pieces get stuck between the blades, making them hard to clean. A regular knife or kitchen shears will do the job just as well without the added hassle.
Microwave Pasta Cooker

This is one of the few kitchen gadgets that is obviously a scheme to make money. A microwave pasta cooker is simply not worth anything. It takes much longer to cook pasta than making it the regular way, and you might not get the depth of flavor you want because of the lack of flame. It’s also probably riddled with microplastics; who needs all those health concerns?
Toast Tongs

Toast tongs might seem useful for picking up hot toast, but they’re just not necessary. A fork works just fine, or you can simply wait a few seconds for the toast to cool down. This gadget ends up taking up space in your kitchen and rarely gets used. It’s one of those things you think you need, but you really don’t. Instead of buying another tool that will just sit around, stick to what you already have — it works just as well!
Electric Egg Boiler

Invest in an electric egg boiler only if you don’t have access to gas. Electric egg boilers are pretty dumb; they take up a lot of kitchen space and consume a lot of electricity, so you’re basically paying double to boil eggs. It’s much faster and more efficient to boil an egg traditionally, mainly because you still have to peel them either way.
More For You

Even though our mothers didn’t teach us many things while we were growing up, if there is one thing that we are forever thankful for, it’s the cooking skills that she passed on to us.
