We all want our homes to look flawless and feel comfortable. This can be quite a challenge! With so many constantly changing trends and design ideas out there, it can be intimidating to begin decorating your home. But don’t worry! I have simple decorating rules that you can use to make sure your home looks gorgeous and feels inviting. When you stick to these rules, I promise your home will always make you smile!

Use Multiple Forms of Lighting

Having a lot of light is always essential. The light in a room will ultimately set the mood and tone. Light helps make a room feel cozy and welcoming, and it can also brighten a workspace. Having multiple light sources in one room will give you options, allowing you to make a room brighter when needed or dimmer to set a more relaxing vibe. Use sconces, table lights, chandeliers, or high hats to layer the lighting in a room. Getting just the right balance of light will make your space feel comfortable any time of day or night.

Stick to A Cohesive Color Theme

As you walk through your home, you want it to flow and feel like it is all connected. The paint colors in each room will make this happen. While every room does not have to be exactly the same color, you should always have a cohesive color palette that applies to the whole house. If you were to walk from room to room and be faced with a different, shocking color, the home would not feel unified or connected. So, before you start painting, look at each color sample together and make sure they go well together.

Decrease Clutter

A cluttered home automatically feels frantic and uncomfortable. Even if you have tons of trinkets lining your shelves, it makes the eye bounce around the room, unable to focus or relax. Try to decrease the amount of clutter in your home to make it feel neater, more organized, and a more relaxing place to be. Clutter equals chaos, which you don’t want in your home!

Personalize Your Art

The art on your walls should reflect who you are and what you like. Never buy stock art pieces just to fill a space! It will make your home feel cold and heartless rather than warm and welcoming. Try to incorporate your own photos or homemade art to make your home personalized and unique. How much character a simple family photo can add to a room is incredible.

Measure Twice, Order Once

When decorating your home, you must always have your measuring tape on hand. It is almost impossible to guess and be correct on measurements every time. Measuring mistakes is one of the most common reasons why decorating projects go wrong or get delayed. Always measure before you order so you know the pieces you pick will fit into your space.

Design with Functionality in Mind

Always remember that you will be living in your home. It is not just for show! When you are decorating a room and designing a space, always keep human functionality in mind. You need elements of comfort along with those modern decorations or else the room will never be practical. Order that cozy couch instead of the uncomfortable designer chairs and keep your walkways open and clear for easy mobility. You want to enjoy living in your home just as much as you enjoy looking at it!

Choose a Focal Point

Each room needs a central focal point that guides the rest of the décor. For example, the table in the dining room is often the focal point of that specific room. A statement rug or stunning chandelier can be the most impactful piece of a room. An oversized, cozy couch may also be the focal point. It is really your choice! But, when you find your favorite piece for each room, make that the center of attention and choose the rest of the decor to match.

Incorporate Greenery

Add a plant, either alive or artificial, to your space. Voila! The room will instantly feel more inviting. There is just something about adding greenery to a room that makes it feel more welcoming and natural. Add a tall tree to the corner of your room, or decorate your mantel with flowering plants. There are lots of different types of houseplants out there to choose from!

Add Textures for Depth

Mixing textures can be a complete decor game-changer. Adding fluffy pillows, a knitted blanket, or a sleek wood table can enhance your space instantly and make it look visually more appealing. You need to play around with texture and see what works for your space and what you enjoy. Everyone’s style will be a little bit different! Just keep in mind that it is all about balancing rough with soft to get that cozy layered look.

Add Area Rugs

Rugs are like magic for defining spaces, especially in bigger open floor plans. You can throw one under your dining table to set it apart from the living room area or place one between a group of chairs to make them look more pulled together. Rugs also help add a cozy vibe and make everything feel more cohesive. They are also perfect for adding a pop of color or pattern without going overboard.

Experiment with Metallic Accents

Adding a bit of metallic shine can make any room feel extra special. Try using small touches of gold, silver, or bronze in things like picture frames, candle holders, or small vases. These little pops of metal give a warm and stylish look without being too much. It’s an easy way to make your space feel polished and inviting, catching the light just right.

Create Cozy Reading Nooks

A reading nook is a perfect little spot to relax and escape. Find a quiet corner, add a comfy chair, and layer it with soft pillows and a cozy blanket. This nook becomes a welcoming retreat where you can unwind with a favorite book. Add a personal touch, like a small side table or a reading lamp, to make it even more inviting.

Add a Pop of Color

Neutral colors are classic and always look good, but a bit of color can make your space feel more lively. Try adding a bright throw pillow, a bold piece of artwork, or a colorful chair to give the room some energy. These little bursts of color act like fun highlights and help show off your personality. Even a small splash of color can completely change the feel of a room!

Keep Furniture Centered

Pushing furniture against the wall can make a room feel stiff and awkward. While some pieces, like a TV console or a bookcase, will need to go against the wall, you need to then fill the center of the room with a couch or tables. Giving pieces a little breathing room makes everything look more inviting and open. This is a simple design trick that creates better flow and balance in the space. Furniture away from the walls just makes the flow better! You don’t want to have a big, open space in the center of every room.

Add Mirrors

Never underestimate the power of a mirror! Mirrors add so much light and depth to a space that the room will instantly look larger than it is. I like to look for large statement mirrors to make a significant impact. You can also try using smaller mirrors that will blend into the decor while also reflecting the views you want to highlight.
